Let me tell you a few things about my 9 year old son, Buzz. First of all, he’s fearless. He’ll be the first one to climb to the top of a tree and then swing like a monkey from an unstable branch. In fact, I’ve learned to never underestimate him, because he’ll always prove me wrong.
Take our backyard swimming pool. I just assumed that he would be the last to really enjoy the water, when in reality he was the first to discover just how fun it could be with dunks and dives and jumps.
Fearless.
His sister quickly following behind.
Which is why safety is so important. And here are a few tips to make sure everyone, those fearless kids especially, are safe and can continue to have fun while in the pool.
5 Step Pool Safety Checklist
1. Get Covered – Before you head outside, cover yourself and the kids in sunscreen.
2. No Diving – This is noted on the sides of most pools for a reason.
3. Watch Your Space – Always keep aware of your surroundings.
4. Keep Hydrated – In the hot summer sun, fresh water should always be available.
5. Be Present – Make sure an adult is present at all times.
But accidents can happen. In fact, each year, 2.6 million children visit emergency rooms for sports and recreation-related injuries. Which is why active families should consider learning more about accident insurance, like those available through Aflac.
Aflac Accident Insurance
For six decades, Aflac insurance policies have given policyholders the opportunity to focus on recovery, not financial stress. The company’s voluntary products, which supplement major medical plans, are designed to pay policyholders directly for costs associated with a covered serious illness, injury or loss. In addition, the cash benefits can be used for rent, gas, groceries, child care or any other out-of-pocket expenses a worker may have. As you can imagine, Aflac understands the urgency and importance of being there when it matters most. While families usually cannot purchase accident insurance until their company offers open enrollment each fall, it is important to understand what accident insurance is and how it can help keep your family’s finances protected prior to selecting next year’s benefits.

Aflac SmartClaim® One Day PaySM
A lot of insurance companies talk about how much money they’ll save policyholders on premiums, but people buy insurance to get paid when they need to file a claim. Aflac understands the urgency and importance of being there when it matters most. Submitting health insurance claims isn’t something people necessarily look forward to doing – with claim denials and waiting up to a month for payment, it can be a long and difficult process. And while 30 days may not seem like a long time, for families struggling to pay medical expenses, it can feel like a lifetime. Therefore, Aflac recently introduced One Day PaySM – an initiative that allows Aflac to process, approve and pay eligible claims in just a day.
So have fun, stay safe, and when unexpected injuries occur, make sure you’re prepared!

We spend a lot of time at my brother’s pool during the summer and these are all important safety tips. I really agree with the “Be Present” suggestion. Accidents happen within miliseconds, so it’s critical to be engaged with what’s happening in the and around the pool area!
My grands spend a lot of time in the pool and it’s good to know that Aflec is there in case something happens. Thanks so much for the awesome tips and I hope everyone has a safe summer.
Being present is so important! So many accidents happen while swimming – good to know Aflac is here to help.
Great tips! I have to fight my kids to come out of the pool for a drink- but it’s so important! And keeping them from diving! So difficult!
Beautiful great post! especially for the summer and that the kids are out of school. I will be sharing this list with my son, for safety awareness. Thanks for sharing.
Great tips – we are going to be buying a new house and hopefully with a pool!
