When it comes to holidays from the heart, like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, I much prefer to get gifts that are handmade. This is especially true when it comes from the kids. Knowing they took the time and effort to make something special just for me is a gift in itself. These Aluminum Foil Yarn Flower Ornaments are definitely special and quite beautiful I believe! Whoever they’re gifted to is going to feel so very loved.
We made a set of 3 Aluminum Foil Yarn Flower Ornaments. A heart, a diamond, and a circle cut from empty cracker and pasta boxes. Wrap each in sheets of aluminum foil then glue loops of yarn to form the shape of a flower. Simply add another longer loop of yarn on the back for the hanging, or you could even add a magnet instead.
There’s really nothing else you need for these Aluminum Foil Yarn Flower Ornaments. Aluminum foil, empty boxes, yarn in assorted colors, glue and scissors. It’s a fun project with a beautiful outcome! And kids get to play with glue and work on their scissor skills.
Aluminum Foil Yarn Flower Ornaments
- empty boxes (cracker, cereal, and pasta boxes work well)
- aluminum foil
- red, pink, yellow, and green yarn
First, cut the empty boxes. You need only the larger, flat sides.
Trace or draw your shapes to cut out. We used a bowl to make our circle, simply drew the hearts, and used a ruler to make sure all sides were equal for the diamond.
Then, tear a strip of aluminum foil. I suggest doubling up. And simply wrap the aluminum foil around your cardboard shape, gluing in place as you go, until the shape is completely covered. Wrap with another piece if needed, again gluing in place as you go.
Once covered in foil, cut small pieces of yarn to make petals. Apply glue to foil where you want the petal to be and apply the yarn in a petal shape. Continue going around gluing and forming petals until the flower is formed. Take a piece of yarn in another color and wrap in a circle. Glue in the middle of the flower.
Finally, apply a line of glue for the stem. Adhere a green string of yarn. Continue wrapping the end of the yarn to the back and glue to secure. You can then also cut smaller pieces of green yarn to make leaves along the stem.
Use a stronger kind of glue, like E6000, to add a loop on the back or magnet and you have a great kid-made decorative gift for either Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, a loved one’s birthday or just a fun Spring craft!
