Root beer floats are nostalgic. I remember summer nights as a kid, with frosty glasses of vanilla ice cream and A&W Root Beer. Served with a spoon and a straw, I never knew if it was a drink or a dessert. What I did know was that it was a treat, and a special one at that. Every root beer float I had made me want another.

You can’t improve much on a root beer float. It’s the same now as it was then. A chilled glass of vanilla ice cream combined with A&W Root Beer resulting in an overflowing frothy volcano from the glass. You can make the root beer a little bit healthier with less calories, however.

Wanting to make new memories of root beer floats with my family now without all the calories, I found liters of TEN calorie A&W Root Beer from the Four TEN Calorie DPSG products available at Walmart. With only ten calories, you can enjoy the four Dr. Pepper Snapple Group products 7UP, Sunkist, A&W and Canada Dry in full flavor, which means full taste, with less calories! So many drink possibilities, but all I can think about right now are root beer floats!

For our root beer floats, I first gathered our ingredients:

• A&W TEN Root Beer
• vanilla ice cream

You don’t need a lot to make a good thing! I used mason jars for our glasses and don’t forget the bendy straws. I also suggest a plate or towel under the glasses, as part of the experience is watching it overflow.

Two, or 3, big scoops of vanilla ice cream in each glass, then pour your A&W. It’s a classic! Is it a drink or is it a dessert? It’s both! You can’t even tell there’s only 10 calories in the root beer, but your bathing suit this summer will thank you. Too bad they don’t make 10 calorie full flavor ice cream, though.
