Could you have a stash of hidden treasures? Toys stored away for many years could be worth more just purely sentimental value. Adults collecting retro toys, (figures, soft toys and console devices and games from the not too distant past), is an extremely popular global phenomenon, with collectors willing to pay extortionate prices for a rare toy to add to their collection. Valuable toys sought after online can take many forms, but the most popular include:
1. Targeted Toys:
Most collections concentrate on a specific type of retro toy, usually dependent on the collector’s gender. Model cars, such as by Dinky and Matchbox, are one of the most popular men’s collectibles. Their small size, different colours and up-to-date representations of real cars make them easily collectible, and the rarer they are the higher the price, although only the best condition cars earn top dollar. Some of the most popular collections for girls both young and young at heart concentrate on the extravagant world of Barbie. With so many varieties to choose from, vast collections revolve around the (mostly) blonde bombshell’s fantastic-in-plastic fantasy lifestyle, with very excessive prices to match.
2. Character Toys:
Hit films can earn and develop a franchise, with Disney, Star Wars and Harry Potter figurines and soft toys being highly sought after by their faithful fans. TV shows and Cartoons are no exception, with Thunderbirds another collector’s dream, and the legacy of Pokemon on-going (although, thankfully, not the trading cards craze!). Even much-loved story books have gotten the toy-treatment, with favourites such as Winnie the Pooh emerging from the Hundred Acre Wood into collector’s open arms.
3. Electronic Toys:
At the other end of the spectrum, electronic games and toys have surged into our lives. Everything from baby-talking Furbys, needy Tamagotchis, and Nintendo, Gameboy and Playstation consoles of all shapes and sizes have all found places in hearts and collections. Now would be the time to sell Playstation 2, since it was recently announced that these consoles are no longer in production. Such an out-dated console and it’s games will only decrease in value, so it’ll be a good idea to cash in while you can. Particularly look to a money-exchange website like Music Magpie, offering the fairest and best price online.
So go on, dig out your old toys, and even ask your parents and grandparents about what they might have kept. You could make a tidy sum, and help tidy those attics and closets!
