Crayon resist watercolor art is a big deal around here. It’s so fun to see whatever you drew come to life with the help of a white crayon and watercolor paint. This is a great artistic craft for all ages, a fun toddler craft, but a winning craft for teens, too. We used paper plates for our crayon resist watercolor fall trees, because the paper plates seemed easier to contain the paint. Plus, the circular shape was fun. And we just love crafting with paper plates. The same concept could be used on white cardstock, however.

Paper Plate Fall Tree Craft Step by Step Directions

Begin this simple fall tree craft by gathering a brown marker and a paper plate. Draw the branches of a tree on the paper plate with the brown marker.

Use a brown marker to draw tree branches.

The branches don’t have to be perfect, of course. Make them as wild and crazy as you want. That’s why this is a perfect craft for all ages.

Now, once the branches are drawn, use a white crayon to make simple leaf shapes all over the branches.

It’s a white crayon, so you’re not going to see what you’re drawing. But that’s what makes it fun, and always a bit of a surprise.

Begin painting watercolors over paper plate.

Then, when it’s all drawn, gather your watercolor paints and begin painting over the paper plate in fall watercolors.

Watercolors.

Continue painting with different fall colors – red, orange, yellow, even a touch of purple and green – until your tree is complete. Don’t worry if some of the paint pools, it will just make it darker in those areas when it dries.

The final and last step is to let the paint dry completely. Then make some more!
