New babies have always been a big deal; some people liked to take out ads in the newspapers to announce their new arrival, other sent out photo postcards to family and close friends, and no one can forget the phone chain that started with two proud grandmothers calling everyone they knew. Nowadays, most people are content with making an announcement on Facebook and taking a few pictures shortly after the birth, but this lacks the excitement of previous announcements. To make sure your little one makes a fantastic entrance, here are some creative ways to announce the birth of your baby.
It might be retro, but it does provide your friends and family with a little souvenir of the day your child was born – and makes it less likely that those who matter will forget their birthday the following year. Handmade birth announcements allow you to get a little creative with the design and presentation, and it is nice for everyone to get something in the mail for a change. Birth announcements can be designed any way you want; some have designed them to look like baby outfits, others like a stork bringing a bundle, and if you’re really talented you can incorporate some origami in the design. Just make sure you include an adorable picture of the new baby.
Perhaps it’s best to save announcement boxes for close relatives, as they could get a little expensive. But the beauty of the boxes is you can put in any present you think would be appreciated by the recipient, or would best reflect your growing family. You could have a new family photograph turned into a puzzle and send it to be assembled, or you could have T-shirts printed with each person’s respective relationship to the baby (Grandma, Auntie, Uncle, or Big Brother) so it feels a little more personal. Make sure you decorate the boxes themselves.
Newborn photo shoot
They grow up so fast, so it’s best to commemorate how small they are as soon as possible. Try to schedule the shoot with your photographer in advance of your due date, so the baby will be around one or two weeks old when it finally takes place. Newborns take the best pictures within the first two weeks of birth as they are asleep 99.9% of the time and still comfortable in the super cute fetal position, which make it easier for the photographer to manipulate their body without disturbing them too much. Make sure you take the time to get a family picture taken, especially if your family has grown since the last time you did a photo shoot.
If this isn’t your first baby, then getting their older siblings involved in creating a birth announcement will help them feel included throughout the big changes. You could even dig out old scrapbooks with their own birth announcements to reassure them that they were given just as big a fuss as their new baby sibling.
