Goodbye dull and dreary, hello sunshine!
It’s time to pack away the warm woollen blankets and snuggly cushions as summer is here and ready to be embraced. Just as we put away our winter clothes to make room for summer attire, our homes should reflect the season we’re in.
It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to add a splash of summer to a few rooms of your home, and with a little imagination and creativity you can create a completely different ambience without too much effort. You only have to look inside the pages of a home decor magazine or stroll into the nearest modern commercial space for inspiration; where adding interesting touches like a cloud ceiling can completely alter the feeling of a room.
Bring the beach inside
Being near the ocean is a quintessential part of summer, so why not incorporate small reminders of your time at the beach within your home decor and accessories? Consider adding a small shelf in a bedroom where you can display some shells and interesting pebbles that have been collected from the shores.
Alternatively driftwood can be put to good use by making it into a frame for your favourite holiday picture, or to paint an inspirational quote onto before hanging from a wall.
Use natural materials
When it comes to summer furniture and accessories try to stick to a palette of pale wood and woven items. Whicker or raffia baskets are both practical and beautiful, and when added to a room decorated with nautical blue and white look fresh and modern.
If you wanted a radical change, consider lifting dreary carpets to expose wooden floorboards, which can be sanded and lightly varnished. You’ll be amazed how light and airy this makes your room feel.
Accessorize to the max
Adding accessories is a quick and low cost way to change the overall look of a room, and the effect of several brightly coloured scatter cushions placed along a sofa should not be underestimated.
Candles in tall storm jars look very effective, as do cool cotton throws in ethnic prints.
Keep it clean
Your home has been a cosy warm haven for your family for the past few months and is probably in dire need of a deep clean and freshen up. The first step in any summer makeover is to let in some light and fresh air – take down your window dressings to wash them and throw your windows open wide.
In order to fully appreciate your new surroundings make sure you dispose of anything that hasn’t been used for a while, or doesn’t fit in with your new summer theme. You’ll be surprised how much additional stuff you have gathered so use this opportunity to have a good clear out.
Add a splash of colour
If your walls are adorned with dreary patterned wallpaper or paint that has seen better days, now might be the time to redecorate.
Creating a feature wall in a bright funky colour can really cheer up a room, and is a great way to inject some summer hues without having to redecorate the entire house. Alternatively painting the walls in clean, fresh white provides the perfect backdrop for your new summer accessories.
