My kids are out of this world, that goes without saying. They say men are from Mars, but I believe kids must be from Pluto. They’re my little intergalactic aliens and I love them, however, so we look past our differences. To do so, we sometimes need to come together for a family movie night. And that’s why I picked up Guardians of the Galaxy, which just came out on DVD on December 9th.
I am fascinated by stars and space and the planets that surround us and those that go way beyond. There’s so much out there, it’s hard to imagine how vast and full space really is. Each planet is truly unique and able to teach us so much. I want my kids to learn about it all, too, since they are out of this world. Because this galaxy is so much bigger than them or even this Earth.
I thought this would be a great learning opportunity to go along with our viewing of Guardians of the Galaxy. So we colored pictures of each of the planets in our solar system while reading stories about everything else that could be out there and worth guarding. With special attention on the planet of Pluto, because it’s my favorite. I know they no longer consider Pluto a planet, but I do. It’s where my kids are from on their bad days, after all.
Then, it was time for the movie.
Considering the time of year, though, I wanted to incorporate the jolly festivities while carrying on the theme. So while at Walmart grabbing a copy of Guardians of the Galaxy on DVD, I also selected a few action figures, including Rocket Raccoon, and what I would need to put together an Out of This World customized Christmas stocking. The DVD itself is pretty out of this world, with such great features like an exclusive character O-sleeve and exclusive music zinepack and a 64 page magazine with cast and crew interviews, exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and trivia plus a custom “cassette” laptop decal. Finding all the toys, DVD, and figures I needed was easy with the Guardians of the Galaxy in-store display.
Out of This World Christmas Stocking
Supplies needed:
- plain white stocking
- paint in different colors (I used red, white, cream, blue, green, yellow, and black with a few mixed together for more colors)
For the stocking, all you need is a plain white stocking and some paint. I found a stocking with these 4 dangling balls and that worked perfect for planets. You could always just paint them on, too, though.
To make the stars, I drew stars on regular paper in a couple varying sizes, cut out then simply traced with paint on the stocking and filled in. I also painted in a sun at the very top for the planets to circle.
Stuff with Guardians of the Galaxy toys and the DVD and you have a great gift idea for a space fan, movie fan, or both!

This movie is the best! I loved the humor in it and I loved GROOT!! This stocking is such a creative idea I think any boy would LOVE to get this.
That stocking is adorable! I wish my youngest would still do crafts or crafty things. We loved Guardians of the Galaxy, but we’re hooked on everything and anything Marvel. My phone is covered in Thor, he’s on my wall over my treadmill, and I really need to get my butt to the store to buy the DVD and re-watch it! “I am Groot!”
The stocking turned out awesome, what a great idea! I too, love space and the unknown!!
Great idea to do your own stocking, this would make a wonderful donation for a family in need!
I love this themed stocking! You definitely transformed it from a plain white to one fit for a Guardians of the Galaxy fan!!
My kids love our solar system and know all of the planets. They’d get a kick out of this themed stocking!

I think if my grandson could design his own stocking, it would be trains and cars. You did a great job with that stocking. So cute!
Your Guardians of the Galaxy stocking is super cute. I really like that you put the planets on it to make it fit even more!
