Handprint Sun Craft

There’s something just so cute and sweet about handprint crafts like this darling Handprint Sun Craft. It’s a cherished keepsake from child to parents, but I could also see it as a sweet preschool classroom craft, too, with all the handprints of each child making up the sun.

Paper Plate Handprint Sun Craft

Speaking of preschool, not only do we love handprint crafts, but we also love any craft that helps with scissor skills. It’s why I usually prefer cut out handprint crafts to paint handprints. That, and paint is messy. My son is messy. That’s a lot of messy.

Handprint Sun Paper Plate Craft

Handprint Sun Craft supplies needed.

To make our handprint sun craft you will need paper plates, yellow acrylic paint, yellow and pink cardstock, a black marker, 1” circle paper punch, scissors, and a glue stick.

  • Yellow acrylic paint
  • Cardstock – yellow, pink
  • 1” circle paper punch
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Paper Plate Sun Craft Step by Step Directions

Begin with a paper plate and yellow paint.

Paint paper plate yellow.

Paint the paper plate yellow. Let dry completely.

Trace handprint on yellow cardstock.

While the paint is drying, trace the little one’s handprint on yellow cardstock. We used different shades of yellow for a bit more interest.

Cut out all the handprints.

Cut out all the handprints. You will need 6-8 handprints total, depending on how small your child’s handprints are. My 5 year old has big hands so we needed 6.

Begin gluing handprint to the back of the paper plate.

Now, with the paint completely dry, turn the plate over and begin gluing the handprints to the back of the plate. Make sure the fingers are showing from the front.

Glue handprints all around plate.

Glue the handprints all around the plate.

Handprint sun.

Then flip the paper plate back over.

Draw face with black marker.

Draw a simple face in the center of the paper plate with the black marker.

Glue 2 pink circles in place for cheeks.

Finally, punch out 2 circles of pink cardstock or paper with the 1” paper punch. Glue those in place for cheeks.

You’ve now made the cutest, sweetest sun craft probably ever.
