My Valentines this year, as they have been for years now, are my kids. But that certainly doesn’t mean I miss out, and definitely neither do they. There are small touches you can make that will make day the extra special, no matter who you’re with.
1. Say I love you. This is always first and foremost, and should be a given. If you love someone, let them know. This shouldn’t be limited to special occasions, however. Let them know every day.
2. Special Treats. Nothing says I love you better than chocolate. Or cake. Or cupcakes. You see where I’m going with this, right? I’m big on eating, but not a great baker, however. That’s why I’m so glad there are others that can do it for me.
3. Laugh. Nothing makes a heart happier than to laugh, even if at first it hurts. Heartily and fully, not between tears. So skip the sappy movies, especially if your love life is on a downswing this year. Who needs to watch The Notebook yet another time, anyway? And turn on something funny.
4. Make the day special for someone else. That’s what I’m planning on doing. Yes, I’m going to laugh and devour a few special treats. I will take my own advice. But what I’m really looking forward to is making sure my kids have a very happy Valentine’s Day.
