Elderly people are a growing population, but a percentage of them live in isolation. Some of them live in homes by themselves, while others reside in Ohio retirement communities. Socializing is an important aspect of seniors’ lives. Studies show that socialization helps senior citizens have sharper memories, increased feelings of happiness, and have an overall improved mental health.
According to a Canadian study, the higher the percentage of an elderly’s participation in social activities, the higher the odds are of having a positive health and happiness. This is the reason why socialization should be a big part of seniors’ lives.
Most seniors have health problems including chronic illnesses, osteoporosis, and heart trouble. Socializing among seniors can be possible through exercises that will not only allow them to be with other seniors, it may also prevent them from having the said health conditions. Exercising prevents their muscles and bones to deteriorate faster. That being said, local exercise programs with socialization is beneficial in the later years.
Socializing can also boost an older person’s memory. Dementia and Alzheimer’s are memory problems that most seniors are plagued with. Through socialization, the elderly’s mind remains active, as it is continuously used. Socialization allows seniors to have a stress outlet and it also gives them the opportunity to have strong mental health, even with age.
Purpose and belonging
Most seniors tend to feel neglected when they no longer get to spend as much time with their families. Active socialization, especially with friends and family members, allow seniors to feel that they belong and it also gives them a sense of purpose. Aside from spending time with family members, seniors can also join groups and spend time with other people who share the same interests as they have.
According to studies, isolation and stress are some of the factors that are associated with shorter lifespans and poor health among seniors. Socialization plays an important role in increasing an elderly’s happiness. Getting the chance to talk to someone daily, do activities with other people, and exercising can greatly increase the outlook of seniors. This may be the reason why some older people tend to have longer lives if they are happy and stress free.
Some seniors who live alone don’t get the nutrition that they need. In addition, healthy habits can be difficult to follow for seniors. Seniors who have regular social interaction with other people tend to eat healthier, and if they have someone who cares for them, getting the vitamins, minerals, and healthy diet that they need will be easier.
These are some of the reasons why socializing is important in your later years. If you have senior citizens in your family, take time to socialize with them and make sure to make them
feel that they are important in your life. It is through socialization that they get the happiness that they need in order to enjoy life in their old age and have a lengthy and fruitful life ahead of them.
