Head lice are those little insects that live and multiply in human hair and nourish themselves by sucking on blood from the scalp. If you have a lice infestation, you are likely to be suffering from an irritated scalp and discomfort due to the consistant, uncomfortable itch that lice can cause.
Treatment of head lice is recommended as soon as you are diagnosed with an infestation. This is because they are highly contagious and can transfer easily from one person to another.
Effective Treatment of Head Lice
Luckily, there are a lot of ways to treat head lice. You can choose to use over-the-counter treatments available in most chemists or stronger treatments that are prescribed by your physician. Pediculicides are the most common substances prescribed by doctors to treat lice. Chemicals, such as lindane, carbaryl, malathion, and pyrethrum are also among the insecticides that are used to kill head lice. However, the FDA only recommend the use of malathion and lindane.
There is a wide range of lice elimination kits available in the market to help kill the adult lice and their eggs, which should prevent them from spreading. These kits usually come in the form of oil, spray or shampoo. However, it is recommended that you seek your physician’s advice first before trying any of the products in the market. Some of these lice elimination kits can contain strong chemicals that can be harmful for your scalp or hair if used incorrectly.
More importantly, when using any treatment, you must follow the instructions carefully for it to become effective. There are times though when chemical treatments fail to kill head lice because the insects have developed resistance to the treatment. In this case, you may need to seek the help of professional. This can be your ultimate alternative since you can have effective lice removal services in the comfort of your own home from trained professionals.
Aside from over-the-counter treatments, you can also opt to use home remedies using items you can usually find in your kitchen. Olive oil is known to be a powerful head lice removal treatment. It is a good alternative to chemical treatments and is easy to apply. Simply use it to smother and suffocate the head lice by coating a comb with oil and applying to your hair. Once you have applied the oil on your hair, leave it for a while and then wash it thoroughly with your regular shampoo. Remember to thoroughly clean the comb that you used afterwards to prevent spreading them to other members of the household.
Alcohol is also an effective killer of both the eggs and the adult head lice. Similar to olive oil, you can dip a fine comb into the alcohol and use it to comb through your hair. However, you need to be careful when using alcohol because it might cause irritation to your scalp.
Head lice infestation can be bothersome. However, there is no reason to fret because there are several treatment options you can use to remove the lice and get your healthy hair back.
