Many moms are looking to starting their own businesses instead of working for someone else. There are many successful business moms but it didn’t happen for them overnight. Before you quit your day job, be sure your product or idea has a strong market. Once you know you will have a market it is time to focus on the other things you will need as a business mom.
Health Insurance
When you work for someone else, they typically provide your insurance. When they provide your insurance, they pick your plan and pay a majority of your premium. When you are building your own business, you will need to research the best insurance plan for you and your family. Remember you won’t have paid sick days so you will want a plan that will offer you the best coverage for your money.
Liability Insurance
This form of insurance is often not thought about when starting up a business but remember everyone makes mistakes. The best way to protect you from an unwanted lawsuit due to a mistake is to be sure to invest in good liability insurance policy. Every business owner should invest in this type of insurance.
Separate Space
Kids love to touch things, especially things that are not theirs. When starting your own business, you should think about if you are going to run it from home or rent office space. Renting office space can be an additional expense when just starting up so working from home may be better initially. If you choose to work from home, create your own space that is off limits to everyone else. A spare bedroom can be converted into a home office easily. When creating your separate space, be sure to get a separate phone line. You don’t want a potential customer to call and have your child answer the phone. You want your business to seem as professional as possible and separation from your family will help you accomplish that.
Website
We live in a time where customers look up businesses online. Having a website and email address are an important part of starting your business. When creating your website, keep your potential customers in mind. Avoid graphics and other items that can make the page load slowly as that will cause people to click away from your site. If you are not sure how to create a website or do not have the time to dedicate to creating it, there are many companies that specialize in this area. If money is an issue, you can also contact local colleges and ask if they have any interns who could possibly build your website.
Set Business Hours
When running a business from your home, you will be tempted to work twenty-four hours a day or leave to do errands whenever you want. Moms are programmed to attempt to juggle everything. Remember that it is okay to outsource some parts of daily life such as housework. Just like when you worked outside of the home you went to work for a set time and then went home, you need that balance when running your own business. Once you have set your hours you need to stick with them. If you have to leave during your set hours for any reason, be sure to forward your calls to your mobile phone or have a dedicated voicemail.
