Paper Bag Mariachi Craft
Spanish class in school was the first time I learned about Cinco de Mayo. Not to fully date myself, but that was a long time ago. Recently, my little guy has fallen in love with the movie Coco and the colors and culture. While that movie represents a different holiday, we’re all for celebrating Cinco de Mayo, too, and starting with this super fun Paper Bag Mariachi Craft.

You could, of course, use this craft for Day of the Dead celebrations, as well, or any Spanish celebrations. We’ve included a Free Printable Mariachi Template, which includes a mustache, sombrero, and guitar. All that’s needed is to add all the fun, vibrant colors.

Paper Bag Mariachi Puppet Craft
To make our paper bag mariachi you will first need our mariachi template.

You will also need acrylic paint in your choice of colors, cardstock in black, yellow, and brown, markers in black and other assorted colors, colorful rolls of thin washi tape, scissors, and a glue stick.
Mariachi Paper Bag Craft Supplies Needed
- Mariachi Template
- Brown paper lunch bag
- Acrylic paint – your choice of colors
- Cardstock – black, yellow, brown
- Markers – black, assorted colors
- Washi tape – assorted colors and patterns
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Mariachi Paper Bag Craft Step by Step Directions
Begin by painting a brown paper lunch bag in your color of choice.

Paint from under the flap down. Let the paint dry completely.

While the paint is drying, print the mariachi template and cut out the pieces. Trace the mustache on black cardstock, the sombrero pieces on yellow, and the guitar shape on brown. Cut out all the pieces.

Now, use markers to decorate and detail the sombrero and guitar in any way you’d like.

When the paint is dry, glue the mustache to the center of the flap of the bag.

Glue the top of the sombrero to the brim.

Then glue the sombrero to the top of the bag. There are no eyes, as the sombrero and big mustache are supposed to give the illusion they’re covering the eyes.

Next, gather a bunch of rolls of washi tape in different colors and patterns. We used thin rolls. And begin adhering the washi tape in a diagonal pattern across the body of the bag.

When finished with the washi tape, either trim the excess tape from the edges or wrap around the back of the bag.

Finally, glue the guitar in place in the middle of the body of the bag.

Then, of course, you have to make more member of the mariachi band. This is such a fun craft!
