Today is my birthday. To celebrate, I have a fun summer kids craft that involves my favorite flower, sunflowers. They’re just so big and bright and full of light, encompassing all that summer is. This Paper Plate Felt Sunflower may be the next best thing.
We’ve made a few different flower crafts before, but sunflowers are always my personal favorite. This Craft Stick Sunflower was a lot of fun. It was rather simple, too, with craft sticks as rays of sunny yellow petals. This Paper Plate Felt Sunflower is just as simple, using a yellow paper plate that can find at the dollar store, brown felt for the seeds, and green felt for the stem.
What’s really fun about this craft is snipping all the pieces of brown felt and then letting them sprinkle down on the sunflower to fall where they may. You could also take this idea a step further and cut notches out of the paper plate for a more petal-style effect. But we were mostly excited to play with the felt.
Paper Plate Felt Sunflower Craft
- yellow paper plate
- green and brown craft felt
- wood craft stick
- craft glue
Begin by cutting the brown craft felt into tiny specks. You can create small diamond or triangle shapes. Set them aside as these will be seeds of the your sunflower.
Cut out a strip of green craft felt for the sunflower and several green felt leaves. These will be used to embellish your sunflower. Add some glue to the back of the green strip and press it to the wood craft stick. Hold in place until secure. Add some glue to the back of the green felt leaves and press them to the side of the stem.
You can now add the seeds to your sunflower. Add some glue to the center of the yellow plate and press the brown felt specks to the glue.
Finish your Paper Plate Felt Sunflower Craft by adding some glue to the back of the plate and pressing it to the top of the wood craft stick. You now have a beautiful sunflower that will never wilt! Be sure to check out more summer craft and recipe ideas at Our Kid Things!
