Up, up, and away! I’ve always been fascinated with hot air balloons, and hope to one day be able to take a ride in one. Never mind the fact that I’m slightly afraid of heights. But there’s no need to be scared when you take off with our Paper Plate Hot Air Balloon Craft!
This Paper Plate Hot Air Balloon Craft is a great craft for Hot Air Balloon Day on June 5th. We’re a little late for that this year, though. Really, hot air balloons seem so amazingly fun and such a breathtaking ride that they shouldn’t be kept to just one day, anyway. Every day is a good day for a hot air balloon and our Paper Plate Hot Air Balloon Craft!
For our Paper Plate Hot Air Balloon Craft, you will need paper plates. 2 per hot air balloon. You will also need paper straws, scissors, hot glue, and paint or markers. One of the best aspects of this Paper Plate Hot Air Balloon Craft is that you can decorate your balloon in whatever way, in whatever design you like. The other fun aspect of this craft is the weaving of paper plate strips for the hot air balloon basket.

Cut one of your paper plates in half. Then cut the two sides of the plate to form a rectangular shape. This will be your hot air balloon’s basket.
Cut vertical lines down your basket, but don’t cut all the way down! Out of the scrap paper plate half, cut small strips of paper plate.
Weave the strips of paper plate through your basket piece, under, over, under over. When it is weaved, secure with glue.
Add a bit of glue to a paper straw and glue on on each side of the back of the basket.
Add glue to the other end of the straws and glue to the back of the still whole paper plate.
Paint the basket area brown. The top of the balloon can be decorated in any pattern or shapes that you would like. Paint, glitter, markers, sequins, etc can all be used.
