Paper Plate Ice Skating Craft

While this craft is for everyone, it’s also a craft for those who love the idea of ice skating, but maybe aren’t coordinated enough to take a spin around the ice. There’s the whole falling thing. There’s no falling with crafting. Unless it’s scissors. I drop my scissors quite often.

Paper Plate Ice Skating Craft

I’ve actually never ice skated before, officially. I used to slide around a pond near my house when I was younger. I have roller skated, though, and that never turned out well. So, we won’t take it beyond there. I’m happy enough with our darling ice skating winter craft.

Ice Skating Watercolor Craft Step by Step Directions

Begin by painting a paper plate ice skating rink with winter watercolors.

Paint paper plate with watercolors.

We used a lot of blues and purples for our paper plates. Just paint and combine the watercolors. Let the paint dry completely.

Paint craft sticks gray.

You will also need to paint two regular size craft sticks per skate, or one regular size craft stick and two mini sticks, with gray acrylic paint. Let this paint dry, as well.

Cut out ice skates.

Now, while all the paint is drying, print the ice skates on the cardstock color of your choice. Cut out the ice skates.

Punch holes along front of skates.

Punch holes along the front of the skate. Make sure you don’t punch too close to the edge.

Guide yarn through end hole and tape to secure.

Cut a small strand of white yarn. Guide one end of the yarn through the end hole. Tape this beginning end in place.

Guide yarn over skate and through each hole.

Then, begin lacing the yarn over the edge of the paper and through each of the holes.

Tape final end to back of skate.

When finished, tape the final end to the back of the skate.

Yarn laces.

Repeat for both ice skates.

Decorate skates.

At this point, you can use a white chalk marker to decorate the skates. Or try using regular markers, metallic markers, stickers, etc.

Break one of the craft sticks in half.

Next, once the craft sticks are dry, cut one of the regular size craft sticks in half.

Glue craft stick blade to back of skate.
Front of ice skate.

Use glue dots to glue the full stick across the ends of the half sticks, forming the blade for the ice skate. We prefer not to use hot glue when working with kids, and the glue dots hold together well. Then, use glue dots to join the blade to the ice skate.

Position skates on watercolor ice skating rink.

Finally, position your ice skates on the watercolor ice skating rink to complete this oh so darling winter wonderland art and craft project. So fun!
