This Patriotic Smush Paint “Stained Glass” Paint Project is a great way to have some mess free painting fun using patriotic colors for the 4th of July! It creates a really beautiful stained glass window decoration when done, too.
I found this clear cellophane wrapping paper in a dollar store a few months back. We made our Hot Air Balloon Suncatcher Craft with it first. However, I just recently realized that it would be the perfect thing for some fun mess free smush paint projects, also.

For our Patriotic Smush Paint “Stained Glass” Craft you will need black cardstock, clear wrapping paper, acrylic paint in red, white, and blue, a glue stick, and scissors.
Make this Smush Paint Art Project
- Black cardstock
- Clear wrapping paper
- Acrylic paint – red, white, blue
- Glue stick
Begin with 2 full sheets of black cardstock.
Have an adult carefully insert the tip of the scissors into the cardstock. Proceed to cut out the inside, leaving a border of at least an inch around.
Now cut pieces from the wrapping paper to fit. Glue the black border to the wrapping paper.
Cut away any excess wrapping paper.
Flip the “windows” over so the backside is showing. Apply globs of glue around the wrapping paper. You can try for a pattern or just go random.
Then glue the back of the other “window” to the back of the “window” with paint, trying to line up the borders as best as you can.
Now, smush the paint around!
Again, you can try to form designs, or just have fun and be random! Watch the colors
So fun! And so bright against a window, too! Be sure to check out more of our July 4th craft ideas for kids at Our Kid Things!
