Recycled CD Penguins

Penguins are so cute, with the way they toddle all about. I love the way they’re loyal to one another and keep in a family. They’re just fascinating. They also make a really cute kids winter craft idea. And it’s an especially great idea when they also use one of my favorite craft materials, old used CDs, like these round and adorable Recycled CD Penguins!

Recycled CD Penguins Winter Kids Craft

For our Recycled CD Penguins, you first need old CDs. We have stacks and stacks of old, scratched rewritable-style CDs that just aren’t any good anymore. Fun crafts like this make a great way to get some use out of them. Paint the shiny side with white acrylic paint.

Then trace a circle the size of your CD on black cardstock, and a smaller circle inside. We use the rim of a cup. Cut that out. You’ll be left with an inside circle of black cardstock that you can then cut in half for the penguin’s wings. Also cut out a small rectangle with jagged edges for the penguins feathered hair. Glue on some googly eyes, a couple circles punched of orange for it’s feet, and a beak for this super cute winter craft of Recycled CD Penguins!

Supplies needed:

  • old CDs
  • pencil
  • white acrylic paint
  • black cardstock
  • orange construction paper
  • medium googly eyes
  • 1” circle punch
  • scissors

First, use a pencil to trace around a CD on black cardstock. Then trace another smaller circle just inside the other circle. We used the rim of a plastic cup. Cut the main circle out of the sheet of cardstock and carefully cut the inside circle out, as well. Cut the black circle of cardstock left over in half for the wings.

Paint the underside, shiny part of the CD in white acrylic paint. Once the paint is completely dry, glue the circle of black cardstock to the edges of the CD. Glue the wings to the side.

Punch 2 circles of the orange paper with your 1″ hole punch. Glue onto the bottom of the CD for the penguin’s feet. Cut a triangle of the orange paper for the penguin’s beak and glue over the hole in the CD. Glue googly eyes just above that. With another rectangle of the black cardstock, cut some jagged lines to mimic the penguin’s feathery hair.
