Back when I was a kid, we either had to go by a friend’s house to talk to them or call them on the phone. The home phone, that was attached by a cord. It’s things like this that really make me feel old sometimes.
Now, however, we can get a hold of anyone or look up anything with just a few clicks of the keys. Our days are made up of so many awesome moments that we just can’t keep to ourselves. We can share everything from your child’s recent school pictures with an aunt in Arizona on Facebook, tweeting a humorous quip on Twitter to a world of followers, to raving over your family’s recent accomplishment on whatever of the many social networks you choose. While that’s a wonderful concept, and makes keeping in touch so much easier, it can also be frightening. Especially when kids are involved.
With numerous connected gadgets to choose from, we are the epitome of a digital family. My kids are online often and have grown up with access to the internet. In fact, they probably know how to work our devices better than I do. While my youngest 2 stick to age-appropriate YouTube videos and games, my oldest can easily get lost in it. I make sure to keep an eye on whatever they’re doing, however.
The #ShareAwesome Campaign
Today’s families use digital technology in every aspect of life – from learning and socializing, to gaming and shopping! Broad access and use of technology is awesome – and opens so many new opportunities for so many students. But like any aspect of life, there are things you need to know to make positive, safe decisions. The #ShareAwesome campaign, a partnership between the National PTA and LifeLock, seeks to build an understanding among parents and students that no matter the device, the app or the networking site – the skills we need to be safe and positive online are similar to what you need offline.
