My 10 year old son is getting to the stage where he wants to know the ins and outs of how things work. He has so many questions, some of which he can find an answer himself on Google. However, reading an answer is one thing, actually understanding is another. Absolutely nothing beats hands-on learning for expanding and remembering growing knowledge.
The Simple & Compound Machines Building Set that we were sent from the K’NEX Education line is a great set for middle schoolers. Not only is it the fun you’re used to from K’NEX building sets, but there are parts that pull and turn. It helps to introduce and teach the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematical concepts.
We built a beginner elevator, for instance, with a working pulley. I say beginner because ours was altered a bit from the included diagram to allow for time constraints, but the main pulley system was in place and operable. It’s easy to see how this could be a wonderful teaching tool in a way meant to keep a student’s interest. These are concepts that all my kids can appreciate, even my 5 year old who may not get the entire concept just yet and my 7 year old, who just likes to play with the pieces. Though in my experience they’re usually the first to catch on.
