Not only is this fall leaf yarn lacing craft a great craft for fall and a fun way to work on those developing fine motor skills, but it’s also a great starter sewing craft to get preschoolers ready to sew. The movement with the yarn is the same as a need and thread.

To make our fall leaf lacing craft you’ll need to print our fall leaves printable.

You’ll also need cardboard, we used a cereal box, as well as a multi-color skein of yarn, a single hole punch, tape, and scissors.

Yarn Lacing Leaf Craft Supplies Needed

Fall Leaf Yarn Craft Step by Step Directions

Begin by printing the leaves and cut out.

Leaf template.
Trace leaf template on cardboard.

Trace the leaf shapes on cardboard.

Cut out leaf shape.

Cut out the cardboard leaves.

Punch holes around edge of leaf.

Now, punch holes around the edges of the leaves.

Tape beginning end of yarn to back of cardboard.

Next, grab a skein of colorful yarn and cut a long piece. We like using the multi-color skeins, but the color of yours is up to you. Bring the beginning end of the yarn through one of the holes to the back and tape to secure.

Wrap tape around end of yarn to make lacing easier.

Use another small piece of tape to wrap around the other end so that it’s easier to lace in and out of the holes without fraying.

Begin lacing yarn through holes and around the edge.

Then, start lacing through the holes. In a hole through the back, around the edge of the leaf, and through the back of the next hole.

When finished with one way, lace the other way.

When we went fully around the leaf one way, we started going back around the other way.

Tape final end of yarn to back of cardboard.
Yarn lacing.

When all the yarn is weaved through the holes, tape the final end to the back of the cardboard.
