5 Ways to Decorate For Next to Nothing

Home is where the heart is, as the saying goes. It’s also where you can really get creative and show off your personal style. There’s no sense living in a home that doesn’t feel like you.
I’ve always loved interior design. I can watch the programs on HGTV for days. In fact, I’m currently watching Home Town while typing this. But my motivation to really get my home pulled together comes and goes. Some days, I let the 3 year old take over and you’ll walk in to stickers on the walls, along with toy cars at your feet. Other days, I’m bringing in fresh flowers and dreaming of a finished bathroom remodel.
Lately, it’s been a lot more of the latter. Though of course the 3 year old puts his stamp on things, too.
By the way, I say finished bathroom remodel because our bathroom has been under remodel for the last 6+ months. But let’s not talk about that.
One of my best pieces of advice in all my years, though, is that making your home your own doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, it can cost very little. The below are my top ways of sprucing up your home on a budget.
5 Ways to Decorate For Next to Nothing
1. Thrift stores – I can not get enough of thrift stores. The first area I always head to whenever I go to a thrift store is the home section. I look through the art, the lamps, the little trinkets, and the furniture. It’s amazing what you can find. Actually, there are plenty of times when I’ve gone that I didn’t find anything. But then there are days I come home with a trunk load.
2. Make it yourself – Of course I’m going to say get crafty with it. But it’s true. For instance, need storage containers? Don’t have a lot of cash? Do you have shipping boxes? Use hot glue and rope to wrap the box. It looks designer and no one will know. Pillows are another great item that you can make unique if you know how to sew. I also love to make our own pictures, magnets, and little touches that really bring the place to life.
3. Gather all your belongings – I recently went through the process of decorating a set of shelves. I kept thinking before I got started that I’d have to go to a thrift store and find some more little trinkets to add, because we’re really not trinket kind of people. However, it’s amazing what I found in our own closets and storage bin. A lot of the stuff I completely forgot about. No money needed.
4. Get the kids involved – Interior design isn’t just about you. It should also include the family and their personalities, as well. I love to have my kids’ artwork on display. I’ve also been known to ask their opinion on paint colors and living room furniture arrangements. Those fresh, young eyes have a way of seeing something that the rest of us may not.
5. Tidy up – Sometimes, a little elbow grease is all that’s really needed. Sad, but remarkably true.
This is such a fun subject for me. I’m slowly bringing in a few pieces at a time, and I can now say that this home really does have my heart now. It makes me inspired to do more, and I hope you’ve been maybe a tad inspired, too.
