Horseshoes and the Best Cheese Sauce Recipe
Now, this is not weight-watching food in any way shape or form. There is nothing healthy about this meal. What I can say about Horseshoes is that they are so good! And so filling!
I mean, what is there not to love about a Horseshoe? We have hamburger, fries, a toasty piece of bread, all topped with what I’ve been told is the best cheese sauce ever. There is no point in adding a veggie here, unless you count the fries. And if you want to make yourself feel better, I give you permission to consider the fries in this meal a vegetable.
In the interest of honesty, this is technically a Ponyshoe. Horseshoes are generally made with 2 pieces of bread. But really, there is nothing small or light about this, so Horseshoe it is. That extra piece of bread might be pushing things.
This is one of my kids’ favorite meals and they ask for it all the time. Of course, you should probably limit how often this is served. You might also want to make a salad for dinner the next night, just to balance things out. But enjoy it while you can, because you’re going to love it!
For a Horseshoe you will need hamburger, bread, and french fries. Now, again, generally Horseshoes are made with individual hamburger patties and you can definitely do that. But with kids, it’s easier for us to just break it up. The fries are frozen and go in the oven according to package directions.
Give the fries about 10 minutes in the oven first then start browning your hamburger. Also, begin the cheese sauce. Oh my word, the cheese sauce! For the best cheese sauce ever you will need butter, flour, milk, shredded cheese, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper.
Melt a stick of butter over medium heat. Once melted, add 1/4 cup flour. Stir continuously for 4 minutes. The 4 minutes is important! If you do not stir continuously for 4 minutes, your cheese sauce will taste like flour and you do not want that.
Once the 4 minutes has passed, slowly stir in 2 cups of milk. Continue to stir often until it simmer. Don’t forget to check on your hamburger, too.
When the milk mixture begins to bubble slightly, add 2 cups or a full bag of cheese. We like a mixed bag, but get whatever you prefer. I would suggest sticking with orange cheeses, though, as they have more flavor.
Stir cheese until melted thoroughly. Add in a splash of Worcestershire and salt and pepper. Cheese sauce, done! Your hamburger and fries should be done, too.
Toast your bread.
To plate, arrange a piece of toasted bread on bottom. Spoon hamburger, then top with fries. Drench with cheese sauce. Have heart attack. But it’s worth it! The best Horseshoes and cheese sauce recipe!

Yum! This is the first time I’ve seen someone outside of Springfield, IL (where horseshoes originated from) ever talk about this dish. It’s one of my absolute favorites! Traditionally they’re made with a white American cheese sauce.
@Cat Davis, That’s because I’m not outside of Springfield, IL :).
@Crystal,
What??? I didn’t know you were from here!!! How have I not known this before now. lol
Oooh – this is a new one to me. My family hails from Ohio, but I’ve still never heard of Horseshoes. I guess it really is an Illinois treat.
I will have to pin this for future reference. Sounds like a great party food, too.

@Stephanie person, I think they’re more of a Springfield thing. Everyone here is crazy for them, but I didn’t realize just how centralized it was to just this area.
