Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat Pencil Toppers
Dr. Seuss is a staple in the life of most children. I grew up on the classics while my kids have the added benefit of the adapted tales on the big screen. Personally, I have to say that nothing beats the books. Now that I’m older, I can see the wisdom in his words. The wonderful thing, though, is that you can like him here or there, you can like your Dr. Seuss anywhere. You can also like him on top of your pencil, with these Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat Pencil Toppers!
To celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss this past Sunday, the 2nd, we made these super easy Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat pencil toppers out of toilet paper rolls.
Cat in the Hat Pencil Toppers
Supplies needed:
- toilet paper rolls
- white paper and cardstock
- red tissue paper
- scissors
- glue and tape
- pencils
One paper roll will make 3 hats. To start, cut the roll horizontally into 3 pieces, then cut down lengthwise. Wrap the roll around itself until you get the right fit for your pencil, then tape closed. The excess will make the hat sturdier around your pencil.
Cut a piece of white paper to the dimensions of the tp roll. Cut 3 small strips of red paper. Glue onto the white paper.
Trace the circumference of the top of the roll onto the cardstock. Once cut out, this will be the top of the hat. Also cut a piece of the red paper to the same size and glue on top of the cardstock. Cut out a larger circle of cardstock for the brim of the hat. I used a bottle cap as my guide.
Punch a small hole in the center of the cardstock circle that you’re using for the brim to as close to the size of the pencil as you can. It should be snug while still able to slide on and off easily. To make it easy, I just poked a hole through with the sharpened end of a pencil.
Tape white paper onto the roll. You could also use glue, but I thought the clear tape would give the paper a little bit more protection. Affix top and brim with glue.
Your pencil now has a hat, just like the cat. How cute is that?
