We added turkey feathers to our hat, and they’re on the printable, too. You could always leave off the feathers, though. They’re just a fun finishing touch and a great way to add a bit of color. I’m not sure pilgrims were really concerned about color back in the day, though.

Thanksgiving Pilgrim Hat Step by Step Directions

Start by printing the pilgrim hat template. Cut out the pieces.

Trace and cut hat shapes from black cardstock.

Trace 3 of the large strips and top of the hat shape on black cardstock and cut out. There are two strips included on the template, so just use one of the strips again. You’ll probably find, like we did, that just two strips won’t fit around the head.

Trace and cut remaining pieces from cardstock in your choice of colors.

Also trace and cut out the belt for the hat in the color of your choice. We chose brown. You’ll also need a buckle in your color of choice. Fold the square for the buckle and carefully cut a window from the center. And the turkey feathers, too.

Glue first strip to top of hat shape.

Now, glue one of the black strips to bottom of the hat shape.

Glue belt in place.
Cut away the excess.

Glue the hat belt directly above the black strip. Cut away the excess.

Add buckle.

Add the buckle, but leave the top unglued.

Glue feathers behind buckle.

Glue the turkey feathers behind the top of the buckle. Once all feathers are in place, glue the top of the buckle.

Staple ends of strips together.

Lastly, staple one of the remaining strips to the end of the first strip.

Staple ends together.
Hat band.

With the last strip, you’ll need to cut this strip to fit the child’s head. Staple it in place. Then, finally, loop it around and staple the last and final ends together to finish your pilgrim headband.

Wearing hat.

Then with that, you’re a pilgrim! Or, you know, at least you can have fun playing one.
