Clothespin Butterfly Craft

Our Clothespin Butterfly Craft is a beautiful spring butterfly craft made with not much more than a clothespin and a pair of colorful pipe cleaners. For such a simple craft, though, there are so many possibilities with how to create and make it your own.

Pink and purple or purple and orange, the choice is up to you. You can make your butterflies as colorful and vibrant, and unique even, as you can imagine. Or at least as colorful as the colors of available pipe cleaners. And there are some bright, shiny colors of pipe cleaners available.

Pipe Cleaner Clothespin Butterfly Craft

To make this butterfly craft you will need wood clothespins, pipe cleaners in an array of colors, acrylic paints in assorted colors, a black pen, and scissors.

Craft supplies needed.

  • Wood clothespin
  • Pipe cleaners – assorted colors
  • Acrylic paint – assorted colors
  • Black pen
  • Scissors

Butterfly Clothespin Craft Step by Step Directions

Begin by painting your clothespins in whatever colors you’d like.

Paint clothespins.

Let the paint dry completely.

Form pipe cleaners in a circle.

While the paint is drying, get started on the wings. For this gather 2 different colors of pipe cleaners. Bring each together in a circle and twist to secure.

Bring circle together and twist into an 8.

Now, bring the circle together and twist each into an 8 pattern.

Twist both 8's together in the center.

Twist both of the 8’s together at the middle.

Clothespin Butterfly Craft

Then, clasp the pipe cleaners in a clothespin.

Cut pipe cleaner in half and form V.

Next, take another pipe cleaner in whatever color you’d like and cut in half. Fold in the middle to form a V shape.

Curl ends to form antennae.

Curl the ends with your fingers to form antennae.

Clasp antennae in clothespin.

Clasp the antennae at the top of the clothespin. You can use hot glue to fully secure it if you’d like, but we left ours unglued.

Use black pen to form two little dots and a simple mouth.

Finally, use the black pen to form the simplest, smallest 2 black dots for eyes and a mouth.

Draw lines on body of clothespin.

We also drew lines across the body for a bit more design.
