My 5 year old is starting kindergarten this year and we are definitely getting excited. If you’re like us and looking forward to the start of school, this fun Back to School Countdown Caterpillar Craft will help you count the days!

This caterpillar craft is such a great craft to keep the excitement going for back to school. If there are 10 days left until the start of school, then make 10 loops for your caterpillar. Remove one loop a day until you get to the 10th and last day, when school starts. So fun! And we have a Free Printable Countdown Caterpillar Template, too.

Paper Loop Caterpillar Craft

To make our back to school caterpillar craft you will first need our caterpillar template.

Craft supplies needed

You’ll also need cardstock in your choice of colors, a red marker, small googly eyes, a glue stick, and scissors.

Back to School Caterpillar Craft Step by Step Directions

Begin by printing the caterpillar template and cut out the pieces.

Cut strips for loops.

Trace and cut out the strips for the caterpillar body loops from your choice of two colors of cardstock. We’re using yellow and orange for this particular caterpillar. 

Glue orange loop through yellow loop.

Take one of the yellow body pieces, apply glue along one of the short edges and glue the edges together to form a closed ring.

Next, take one of the orange caterpillar body pieces and insert it through the yellow ring. Apply glue along the short edge and glue them together to get two connected rings.

Continue gluing all the body pieces together in alternating colors to complete the body of the caterpillar.

Trace and cut face from template.

Next, cut the caterpillar head, mouth and two antennae pieces from the color cardstock of your choice, using the templates.

Glue eyes and antennae, draw mouth with a red marker.

Glue the two eyes on the face and the two antennae behind it. Add a simple mouth with a red marker.

Glue face to front of caterpillar.

Finally, apply glue along the back of the face. Glue the face to the body to complete your back to school caterpillar.
