Tape Resist Hot Air Balloon Craft
One of my favorite ways we’ve been doing some paint projects lately is with tape resist, and that process works perfectly for our Tape Resist Hot Air Balloon Craft. It’s a great way to add some color with paint, and the tape resist makes it unique every time. And we have a Free Printable Hot Air Balloon Template, too!

You can use different sizes of painter’s tape for this project. Or, use washi tape. We had a lot of different sizes of washi tape left over from previous projects, so that’s what we used. Just apply the tape lightly, and it comes off the cardstock without any ripping.

Hot Air Balloon Paint Craft
To make our hot air balloons, you’ll first need our hot air balloon template.

You’ll also need cardstock in brown plus white or other light colors, assorted colors of acrylic paint, washi tape in various sizes, scissors, and a glue stick.
Hot Air Balloon Tape Resist Craft Supplies Needed

Hot Air Balloon Paint Project Step by Step Directions
Begin by printing the hot air balloon template and cut out the pieces.

Trace and cut out the circle from the light color cardstock of your choice. You can choose to keep it white. For an extra pop of color, though, we used a light blue and light purple color for our balloons.

Now, gather different sizes of washi tape. Begin applying the washi tape across the circle in the pattern of your choice. You can go random or be more deliberate about the pattern you’re choosing.

Pour a small amount of your chosen paint colors in a paint palette or a paper plate always works well, too. The more colors you use, the better.

Then, begin painting one color each in the open spaces between the washi tape.

Continue painting until there are no more open spaces.

Once the circle is full, gently remove the tape. We’ve found this is easier to do before the paint fully dries.

Next, cut the basket pieces from the template. Trace the pieces on brown cardstock and cut out.

Finally, glue the two brown strips to the sides of the basket, then glue the basket to the bottom, back of the circle.

Make more using different patterns of washi tape! Such a fun art project to do before going to a Hot Air Balloon Festival or for the next Hot Air Balloon Day.
