We experimented with a lot of different backgrounds for this craft. The contrast of the black cardstock really made the watercolors pop more than anything else. It’s also nice, because the black represents space and the universe and then there’s our Earth, blooming in a beautiful flower.

Earth Watercolor Coffee Filter Craft Step by Step Directions

Begin by placing a coffee filter on a stack of newspapers or something to protect your surface as you will be squirting water.

Color green for land in center of coffee filter.

Now, begin drawing the Earth in the center circle of the coffee filter. We started with green for land.

Color in blue for the oceans with touches of purple.

Then filled in the rest with blue for water, and touches of purple.

Spray with water.

Next, use a spray bottle of water to spray the center of the coffee filter with one good spritz of water. You want the colors to blend together, but not run off completely. So the less you spray, the better. If sprayed on target, then one good spray should be all you need.

Wet coffee filter.
Let coffee filter dry.

Let the coffee filter dry.

Cut simple strip and leaf from green cardstock.

While the coffee filter is drying, cut a simple strip for the stem and leaf shape from green cardstock.

Glue stem and leaf in place.

Glue the stem and leaf to the bottom of a sheet of black cardstock.

Glue coffee filter above stem.

Finally, when the coffee filter is completely dry, glue just the center of the coffee filter right above the stem. The coffee filter will be flattened with the water, so we also folded the edges back up some.

Such a pretty and fun Earth craft, while reusing items we have on hand, too. Happy Earth Day!
